My head falls back on my shoulders and I send up a quiet prayer to God to be rescued from this. Mostly to not get burned. Fuck Rainey and her big fat gossiping mouth. She will pay for this. Though as foolish as you’ve been you’d think there was a knot in the middle of it already,” she scolds me again. I hear Rainey laughing in the chair next to me. We’re at the House of Ricci, a high-end salon in downtown Memphis, getting ready for tonight’s event. Esme Ricci is not only the owner of the salon, she’s one of the most sought-after stylists in town. Too bad she’s as gossipy as Rainey. How the three of us have found ourselves as the southern version of the three musketeers I’ll never know.

“Mimi,” I plead with her. “He’s a friend. That night we just…”

“Fucked like there was no more sex to be had?” Rainey rudely chimes in. This time I lift my head and throw daggers at her with my eyes. She smirks at me and lifts her eyebrows as if to ask if she was lying. Though she does have a point. I did try to have all the sex with him that I could because I knew it was only going to be for one night. I had only one night to let loose and so I took advantage of it. Am I sorry I did? Hell, no. But never in my wildest hopes and dreams did I expect Van to want more and with each year I've found myself wishing I had been brave enough to take up his offers to spend more time together. Where would we be now? I know the answer to my own question. I just refuse to accept it.

“I don’t care about you being mad at me, Macey. You’re losing out on a great guy because of your unwillingness to change your plans.” Her eyes are so bright with frustration. She’s let me know every day since I told her about Van how ridiculous and short-sighted I have been.

I am so angry with her now. “You know why I can’t change my plans!” She knows how important my work is. Maybe she’s spent too much time in administration and has forgotten how hard we fight.
